How you can protect your skin during pregnancy

Updated: Feb 18, 2023

During pregnancy, there’s a very high chance you’ll experience some changes to your skin at some stage.

Changes to hormones, your circulation, and your immune system affect your skin's appearance and sensitivity which can lead to different conditions such as acne, stretchmarks, skin tags and melasma. This last one – often referred to as the ‘mask of pregnancy’ – is a type of skin discolouring or ‘hyperpigmentation’.

As your pregnancy continues, your skin might be the last thing you’ll be thinking about and what some women may find is that those changes might not rectify themselves postnatally.

Treatments during pregnancy

When these changes occur during pregnancy, most women will find that they’re not always able to receive the same level of treatment as non-pregnant women and their options are often limited to off-the-shelf creams and lotions.

Here at Skin Medicine, we aim to be different.

Our skincare range is both pharma-grade and botanically derived.

More importantly, our range is non-systemic which means no chemicals penetrate the skin nor are they absorbed into the bloodstream – making them safe to use during pregnancy and when breastfeeding.

This can often prove a huge barrier with a number of other products on the market and is a common reason why breastfeeding women are turned away from skin treatments.

We wanted our clinic to be inclusive to all people regardless of what changes are occurring in their life.

Prevention is better than cure

Whilst we have a dedicated pregnancy and breastfeeding treatment menu, prevention is always better than cure.

So, if you don’t currently have a pharma-grade skincare regime (which guarantees results) you might want to consider booking a skin consultation with us where we can assess and discuss your concerns.

If you build up your skin barrier prior to conception, then any changes that occur during the pregnancy period will be lessened.

Some ladies find some or all of the above changes occur in their first pregnancy but they know they want more than one child so they naively think they will look at their skincare after they have finished having their family.

Although we understand the thinking, there’s a better approach.

We can advise you on products you can use successfully during the pregnancy period that you can carry on using throughout your life. This means that any changes that are caused due to hormonal changes in the body will be dampened.

Remember, it’s never too early or too late to start your skincare journey.
